IMMHC History
The first International Military Mental Health Conference was held at Lubbecke in Germany in 1998 as the NATO Conference on Military Mental Health. It was attended by some 80 people from the military mental health services of Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The conference took place in the Church House of the British Army Chaplaincy Department, located on a former training camp. This Church House had become the Headquarters of the British Field Marshall Montgomery following the end of the Second World War in 1945.

The initiative for the conference came from Lieutenant Colonel Mike Srinivasan, who at that time was Clinical Director of Psychiatry with British Forces Germany.

The meeting cycle was initiated with the aim to serves as a regular forum for professional dialogue on various issues of common interest in the field of psychological support in the armed forces. That dialogue has given shape to a professional community willing and readiness to exchange information, to share experiences and insights, and to contribute to better mutual understanding and confidence over time. Held annually in different countries, the continuing tradition of Military Mental Health Conferences has been made possible by the fact that many military and civilian professionals from member and partnership countries kindly shared their knowledge and experience. The participants also had an opportunity to express and discuss the national approaches to different psychological support issues through all the spectrum of activities.
